Training of Trainers Workshop on Gender and Climate Resilience Kicks Off
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources, has started a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on Climate Resilience and Gender Equality Adaptation Measures.
The workshop, which runs from August 26 to 28 at the NaNA Conference Hall, is being held under the theme “Integration of Gender-Responsive and Climate-Resilient Strategies in National Adaptation Efforts.”
The training aims to strengthen national adaptation planning by developing tools, materials, and policy frameworks that address the unequal impacts of climate change on women and men, while ensuring inclusive participation in decision-making.
Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Saikou JK Trawally, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Permanent Secretary Illo Jallow. He noted that The Gambia, like many other countries, is increasingly facing the harsh effects of climate change, including rising temperatures, coastal erosion, and flooding.
“These challenges affect all sectors of society, but they do not impact everyone equally,” he said, stressing that women, children, and other vulnerable groups often bear the heaviest burden. He called for adaptation measures that are not only climate-resilient but also gender-sensitive.
Trawally reminded participants that the workshop is meant to equip trainers with the skills and strategies to take this knowledge back to their communities and institutions. “By empowering trainers, we create a multiplier effect that makes climate adaptation efforts inclusive, equitable, and sustainable,” he added.
Participants were drawn from different ministries and institutions across the country, with the aim of building their technical capacity to respond to climate-related challenges.
