About WEF

The Gambia Women Enterprise Fund (WEF) is one of the initiatives designed by the Government of the Gambia and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare established by an act of parliament in 2020 to respond to the challenges faced by women to access finance and to improve the economic empowerment of women in the Gambia thereby reducing poverty among women. It focuses on those measures that can best be delivered through collective action, thus, complementing the national efforts and strategies that are in place to support women.

The WEF assists solely women groups who are in a vulnerable position and require support. These beneficiaries are granted cash loans at a minimal 5 % straight interest rate to venture into various entrepreneurial interventions. To acquire a loan from the Women Enterprise Fund, a group must complete the WEF loan application form and submit it through a regional committee. A regional committee appraises these forms, and successful applicants are recommended for approval by the WEF Board of Directors. All loans must be guaranteed by three executive members of the group who sign the bond of agreement with the WEF. Most importantly, the successful groups must undergo rigorous training on financial literacy and entrepreneurship by the WEF officers before funds are released to their accounts.
