The Gambia has yet again made history as the first African Union (AU) Member State to ratify the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (CEVAWG).
HE. President Adama Barrow signed the Instrument of Ratification on 16th July 2026, underscoring his administration’s prioritisation of gender equality, women’s rights and empowerment. The original copy of the said Instrument was formally deposited with the AU Commission in Addis Ababa on 27th July 2026, marking The Gambia’s leadership in advancing continental efforts to eliminate gender-based violence.
The Convention requires the Member States to put in place and implement legal, protective and social measures and policies to prevent, address and eradicate all forms of violence against women and girls. Being the first to ratify, The Gambia demonstrated its unwavering commitment to fulfilling these obligations, and thereby sets a precedent for other AU Member States.
In recognition of this great achievement, the AU applauds President Barrow’s leadership and steadfast support for initiatives promoting the advancement of women and girls.
Therefore, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare calls on all Gambians to complement government efforts in building a society free from gender based violence.
This milestone positions The Gambia at the forefront of continental action to safeguard the rights and dignity of women and girls, reinforcing the country’s role as a champion of equality and social protection across Africa.
