President Barrow Inaugurates Eveline Schouten School at Bakoteh Shelter for Children

His Excellency, President Adama Barrow officially inaugurated a new school at the Bakoteh Shelter for Children, named Eveline Schouten School. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of vulnerable children.

A Commitment to Social Protection and Inclusion

In his opening remarks, President Barrow reaffirmed his government’s dedication to building an inclusive and compassionate Gambia, ensuring that no one—especially the most vulnerable—is left behind.

“This facility is a vital part of our social protection strategy, which seeks to provide safety, dignity, and equal opportunities for all Gambians.”

He further emphasized the importance of child welfare, stating:

“Our children represent the future of our nation; therefore, it is our collective responsibility to create a safe and enabling environment where they can grow, learn, and reach their full potential.”

Providing Hope and Rehabilitation for Vulnerable Children

Many children find themselves in difficult circumstances through no fault of their own. The shelter stands as a haven of hope and a rehabilitation center, ensuring that such children receive care, protection, and guidance to reintegrate into society as empowered individuals.

The Eveline Schouten School, built within the shelter, features:
      Eight classrooms
      Administrative offices
Additional facilities for education and care

President Barrow highlighted that the school will provide children at the shelter with a solid foundation for their future, giving them a good start in life.

Acknowledging Key Stakeholders and Benefactors

The President expressed deep gratitude to the various individuals and organizations that made this project a reality:

  • The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare for spearheading the initiative.
  • The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for providing teachers.
  • Jan and Maureen Schouten, for fully funding the school in honor of their late niece, Eveline Schouten.
  • Mrs. Henrieta Sonko of MRC Holland, for facilitating the project and her ongoing partnership with the Gambian government.

In appreciation of their tireless efforts and generosity, certificates of appreciation were presented to the benefactors by President Barrow as a goodwill gesture.

Recognizing the Dedication of Social Workers & Caregivers

President Barrow also extended his appreciation to social workers, caregivers, and professionals working at the shelter:

“Your dedication, compassion, and hard work make a significant difference in the lives of these children. My government will continue to support you in your noble service.”

A Symbol of Hope and Collective Responsibility

As Gambia celebrates its 60th Independence Anniversary, President Barrow urged everyone to view this facility as a symbol of national responsibility towards the most vulnerable members of society:

“You can be rest assured that my government remains committed to strengthening child protection systems, expanding social safety nets, and ensuring that every Gambian, regardless of age or circumstance, can live in the country with dignity and security.”
