Hon. Fatou Sanyang Kinteh, Minister of Gender, Children and Social welfare who deputized for His Excellency President, Mr Adama Barrow at the commemoration of the 2024 International Rural Women’s Day organised by Reliance Financial Company on the 19th of October 2024.
In her address at the event in Basse, she told the gathering that in 2017, the United Nations General Assembly dedicated 15th October to be observed as ‘International Day of Rural Women’, to recognise the struggles and achievements of women, as they sweat to maintain rural households and the well-being of their communities, local economies, and society at large.
“Rural women confront the global cost of living crisis. Let’s recognize their work,” Hon. Kinteh who was the chief guest of honor at the occasion, remarked.
In the Gambia, like other countries, rural women are the backbone of our agricultural sector, families, and communities. They are farmers who toil in the sun, entrepreneurs who create livelihoods, caregivers who nurture the younger generation, and the stewards of our cultural heritage. Yet, women often face challenges that undermine their efforts and limit their potential.
